Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge

Waters of the Kodiak NWR
Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) hydrologists began an assessment of selected streams of the Kodiak NWR in 2001. This hydrologic investigation focuses on stream gauging and baseline water quality data collection on 9 streams. Upon completion of this investigation in 2009, the FWS anticipates filing applications with the State of Alaska for water rights (instream flow reservations).

Water rights applications for rivers
On the Kodiak NWR, FWS has filed one surface water right application with the State of Alaska , Department of Natural Resources. Based on historical USGS stream discharge data, the FWS in September 2001 applied for an instream flow reservation of the lower Uganik River to protect fish and wildlife habitat, migration, and propagation. The FWS intends to file additional water rights applications upon completion of the hydrologic investigation underway. Filing for State instream flow water rights reservations does not diminish the existing, unquantified Federal reserved water rights of the Kodiak NWR that were established before Alaska statehood. Map, streamflow monitoring, and water right application information for the lower Uganik River can be viewed by clicking on the highlighted river name in the table below.
