Duties may include field activities such as surveying shorebirds, locating nests and banding birds, and collecting environmental data. Office assistance in Anchorage is also needed. -Visitor Center Assistants
Multiple volunteers needed to staff a visitor center and assist with interpretation programs April - September. Housing provided or cost of RV rental space reimbursed. Applications accepted August - October each year

- Seabird Monitors
Multiple adventurous and hardy volunteers with a background in ornithology or field biology needed to monitor seabirds on remote, uninhabited islands May - September. Applications accepted November - February each year.

-Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival
Multiple volunteers needed to assist with the Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival, which is held on the weekend closest to the 8th of May each year. Positions include: bird viewing station assistants, event ticket takers, set up and clean up for events, and more.

2012 Volunteer Opportunities

We are looking for 6 volunteers. Start date May 13, 2012. These positions will end in late August or early September.

Volunteers will get a chance to work on projects including; moose browse abundance surveys, land cover map validation, intensive vegetation sampling in meadow-like habitats, and small mammal live trapping. You will also be provided valuable wildlife management / remote field safety training including; general aviation safety, aviation water ditching, motor boat operator certification, bear safety / awareness, using less-lethal deterrents for bears, and firearms training (note, not everyone will be required to carry a firearm, but everyone receives the training to be safer around firearms). First Aid/CPR training will be provided for those who do not have a current certification.

Henshaw Creek Salmon Weir We are looking for a friendly, down to earth volunteer to teach at our annual science camp, held in Kanuti Refuge in July at the Henshaw Creek Salmon Weir. The volunteer will help set up the camp, will act as a primary teacher during the full length of the camp (5 days), and will help break down camp when it is over. The volunteer will camp alongside other camp teachers, staff and the students. Camping gear (except a sleeping bag, personal items, 2 towels and clothing), food and transportation between the camp and Allakaket (village nearest to the camp) and Fairbanks (nearest city of departure to the camp) will be provided. This opportunity is an outstanding chance to help connect youth with nature and to experience Kanuti National Wildlife Refuge’s beautiful remote wilderness. Kristin Reakoff
