Land Acquisition
Funding Sources
Current land acquisition activities for the National Wildlife Refuge
System in
Alaska
are primarily funded from the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF). The Land and Water
Conservation Fund [Public Law 88-578, approved September 3, 1964 (78
Stat. 897)] is derived from various types of revenue (primarily Outer
Continental Shelf oil monies) and authorizes appropriations from the fund for
(1) matching grants to States for outdoor recreation projects, and (2) land
acquisition for various Federal agencies. Funds are allocated through the
Congressional appropriations process.
Another source of funding for land acquisition in
Alaska
is the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill
(EVOS) restitution fund. This fund provides monies to Federal agencies for
acquisition of lands within the designated spill zone. EVOS funds are administered by the
Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council.
The Migratory Bird Conservation Fund is utilized in all other regions of
the country by the Fish and Wildlife Service, but has not been ratified by
the State of
Alaska
for use by the Fish and
Wildlife Service in
Alaska
.
