| TITLE: |
Proposed determination of 'compatible'
for extending an existing seismic monitoring network (Right-of-Way
Permit M-299-AM) to additional areas within the Alaska Peninsula
and Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuges. |
| DATE OF DETERMINATION: |
June 22 - June 28, 2001 |
| SUMMARY: |
The Alaska Volcano Observatory is proposing
to extend its existing seismic network to four volcanoes within
the Alaska Peninsula Refuge and 16 additional volcanoes within the
Alaska Maritime Refuge. Seismic monitoring was determined to be
a compatible use in 1998 (Izembek Refuge and Wilderness) and in
1999 (Alaska Maritime Refuge). Currently 10 volcanoes within refuge
boundaries are being monitored by the AVO; this proposal would extend
the seismic network to all 30 active volcanoes within refuge boundaries.
After considering the previous Compatibility Determinations, the
Draft Environmental Assessment and the minimal impacts of the existing
network, the refuge managers of the Alaska Maritime and the Alaska
Peninsula Refuge propose to find the extension of the network compatible
with refuge purposes. The refuge managers invite the public to comment
on the potential impacts of extending the seismic monitoring network.
A Draft Environmental Assessment has been prepared and is also available
for comment. |
