Visiting the Refuge

The Arctic Interagency Visitor Center:

Since 1989, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) has been involved in a partnership managing the Arctic AIVCInteragency Visitor Center in Coldfoot. Located 265 miles north of Fairbanks, this visitor center provides information to people traveling the Dalton Highway. Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, and USFWS visitor center staff inform travelers about road conditions, wildlife sightings, backcountry orientation, and the overall lay of the land north of the Arctic Circle.

In the summer of 2003, the visitor center moved into a brand new building, ten times the size of the previous center. This new center provides many exhibits about life in the Arctic, wilderness travel, and the circumpolar region. Drawers filled with artifacts from the area beckon you to open them. An absence of straight lines throughout the building entices you to keep exploring the numerous corners. New dioramas depicting the boreal forest, Brooks Range, and North Slope enhance the visitor’s experience. An outlet of the Alaska Geographic, provides educational materials to purchase.

If you happen to be traveling on the Dalton Highway, be sure to stop in this new center. Located at Mile Post 175, it is across the street from the rest stop in Coldfoot.
