For Educators
Stewardship Camps
Children from the
Aleutian and Pribilof Islands can attend a week or two of free, summer, Stewardship
Camps in Sand Point, St. George, St. Paul, and Unalaska. Elders from the area,
Native craftsmen, refuge educators and biologists, and community members serve
as camp teachers.
Benefits
Activities integrate refuge resources
and natural processes with cultural awareness and customary and traditional Native
land and resource uses. Each camp is tailored to the needs and wishes of its host
local community.
Goal
The goal of each camp is to help youth
understand, appreciate, and practice responsible natural resource management and
stewardship today and as the decision-makers of tomorrow.
Partners
Alaska
Maritime Refuge, local Native corporations, community governments, the Aleutian
Pribilof Island Association (APIA), and community school districts from Sand Point,
the Pribilofs, and Unalaska.
