Aleutian Canada Goose
Background Information
The Dramatic Recovery of the Aleutian Canada Goose
Thanks to the cooperative efforts of state, federal, private, and
international partners, the Aleutian Canada goose (Branta canadensis
leucoparia) made a dramatic recovery and, on March 20, 2001,
was removed from the list of "threatened" species under the Endangered
Species Act. One of the first species or subspecies ever listed under
the Act, the Aleutian Canada goose's recovery illustrates how conservation
efforts can be effective, particularly when done with the cooperation
of willing partners.
The U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service works with others to conserve,
protect, and enhance fish, wildlife and plants and their habitats
for the continuing benefit of the American people.
