Waterfowl
Northern Pintail

This
striking dabbling duck is a favorite among duck hunters and birders alike. In
the prairie pothole region of the Dakotas and south-central Canada, the population
of this duck is subject to booms and busts caused by changing nesting conditions
and water availability. The pintail population in Alaska is much more stable.
In fact, when the prairies are in the grip of a drought, and pintail numbers there
are low, one third to one half of the continental pintail population breeds in
the water bodies of this vast state.
