Waterbird/Oilspill Impact Modeling Project

The Minerals Management Service requested the Waterfowl Management Branch to develop a model predicting potential impact to waterbirds of hypothetical oil spills from the proposed Liberty Project in the Beaufort Sea off Alaska's north coast. We combined simulated oil spill trajectories developed by MMS and aerial survey waterbird data in a geographic information system (GIS) to predict bird mortality during the open water period in July and August. The results of the model are contained in the documents below.
