Shorebirds
American
Golden Plover

Despite
a population of moderate size for a migratory shorebird (150,000+, Morrison
et al. 2001), this is a species of high concern because of an apparent population
decline and significant potential threats on the non-breeding grounds (Brown
et al. 2001). Among the latter, changing agricultural practices at spring
staging areas in Indiana and Illinois, exposure to agricultural pesticides during
much of the spring migration in North America, and the loss of suitable habitat
on the non-breeding grounds in South America are probably the most important (Johnson
2003).
