The Circumpolar Biodiversity Monitoring Program, or CBMP, is a significant Arctic Council-endorsed, initiative to coordinate international monitoring efforts across the Arctic. It is an ecosystem-based approach that will improve detection and reporting of trends in Arctic biodiversity and identify and address data gaps. The purpose of this broad international monitoring effort is to strive for conservation of biological diversity, to halt or significantly reduce its loss, and provide information for the sustainable use of the Arctic’s living resources for the Indigenous Peoples of the Arctic, and other Arctic residents and stakeholders inside and outside the Arctic. The Circumpolar Biodiversity Monitoring Program is being developed as a direct result from recommendations for biodiversity monitoring made in the 2004 Arctic Climate Impact Assessment (ACIA).

  • The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) is the lead US agency for the Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF), a working group of the Arctic Council, and this lead has been delegated to the Alaska Region. Scientific expertise provided by USFWS biologists is essential to the success of the Circumpolar Biodiversity Monitoring Program. An international experts’ workshop was held in Anchorage November 29 – December 1, 2006 to begin developing the CBMP Implementation Plan. The workshop was led by Environment Canada and co-hosted by the USFWS. The CBMP Implementation Plan is expected to be completed in mid-2007
