Polar Bear
North Slope Borough/Inuvialuit
Game Council Agreement
Concern by the Inupiat and Inuvialuit of northern Alaska and Canada
for the long-term welfare of the southern Beaufort Sea polar bear population
provided the incentive to cooperate in management and conservation of polar bears in this region. In 1988, the “Management
Agreement for Polar Bears in the Southern Beaufort Sea," was
ratified.
The 1988 Agreement provides for:
- protection of cubs and their mothers and denning females;
- restrictions on hunting seasons;
- allocation guidelines;
- prohibitions on the use of aircraft or large motorized vessels to
take polar bears;
- protection of the environment; and
- continued support for polar bear research and data acquisition.
