Habitat & Restoration
Fish
Passage Program
Mission: To restore native fish and other aquatic
species by reconnecting habitat that has been fragmented by artificial
barriers.
The Fish Passage Program provides technical assistance and collaborative
funding to remove, replace, or retrofit culverts, weirs, abandoned
dams, or other man-made structures that impede fish movements and
distribution. The program also supports fish passage barrier inventory,
assessment, survey, and engineering design.
How does the program work? Private, state, and federal
landowners are eligible for restoration assistance from the Fish Passage
program. Applicants can nominate potential projects, which are then
refined, ranked and funded at several intervals throughout the fiscal
year (October-September) by the FWS. Project funds typically do not
exceed $40,000 and matching project contributions are required. Phased
projects or collaboratively-funded projects are allowed. Please contact
the Juneau Fish & Wildlife Field Office for more program information
and project nomination procedures.
