Before land can be transferred, exchanged, or acquired by refuges
either through purchase or donation, an initial contaminants evaluation
must be performed. If the initial assessment suggests there are potential
issues,
contaminant specialists carefully evaluate any contaminant issues
on the proposed property so that an informed management decision can
be made regarding transfer of the area. This internal pre-acquisition
process involves site visits, document searches, and interviews with
previous owners. Once contaminants issues are resolved, often through
remediation by the responsible party, the Division
of Realty completes the land acquisition by purchase, donation
or exchange.
